Seascape of Imagination

2022–ongoing
Photographic and archival research, developed in relation to the School of Imagination

Seascape of Imagination begins at the coastline of Karachi, where fishing, labour, urban expansion and environmental change meet. The project places photographic observations of the shore beside historical image-worlds in which bodies, animals and vessels exceed ordinary perspective. It asks how a landscape can be read not only as evidence of existing conditions, but also as a site from which other futures might be imagined.

Coastline and archive

The photographs do not present the coast as an untouched horizon. They show a working environment shaped by infrastructure, extraction and everyday movement. Set beside a painted scene of collective flight, they open a tension between what the camera records and what fabulation can propose.

Crafting futures and speculative fabulation

Crafting is treated here as a form of historical inquiry. Boatbuilding, drawing and collective making connect the material knowledge of coastal life with speculative fabulation. The project does not attempt to reconstruct a lost vessel or recover an intact past. It asks how fragmentary visual records and situated knowledge might support new forms, while keeping the difference between historical evidence and artistic proposition visible.
